A former West Indies cricketer was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $300,000 after appearing before a Tunapuna magistrate charged with incest.
It is against the law to identify a victim of a sexual crime and since this is a case of alleged incest identifying the person charged can lead to the girl being identified.
It is alleged the incident occurred on July 13 at the home of the victim.
A report was made to the police and the suspect was arrested on Friday at his home.
Appearing before Magistrate Seemungal Ramsaran, the accused was not called upon to plead as the charge was laid indictably.
Appearing on his behalf, attorney Ken Wright requested reasonable bail, stating his client was well known and was not a flight risk.
Court prosecutor Sgt Trivelle Petti objected to bail on the ground the suspect was indeed a flight risk as he played many tournaments internationally.
Magistrate Ramsaran agreed with Sgt Petti and ordered that the man’s passport to be seized as a condition for his bail.
The case was then adjourned to September 15. (Reprinted from the Trinidad Express)
