Following Saturday’s bizarre conclusion of the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) T20 competition where a series of mindboggling incidents eventually led to the Barbados Tridents being crowned champions, the Guyana Amazon Warriors were expected to return home last evening.
The game which ended in a strange manner after officials eventually called off the game with 4.1 overs remaining and the Warriors needing 46 runs from 25 balls in their chase of 152, has led to an appeal launched by the Guyana team. When the Tridents batted there were two rain interruptions at the end of the seventh over and one during the 12th, but they still managed to bat out their full quota of 20 overs.
After a relatively slow and watchful start, the Warriors were 107 for 4 in 15.5 overs when the rain returned.
As viewed by the thousands of fans around the world who paid keen attention to the game, the stumps were erected again and the pitch and field seemed ready for play again with the process being conducted under the watchful eye of the fourth umpire.
Fans were also updated on social media via the CPL Facebook page which notified followers that the game would indeed restart. However it was stated that the umpires strangely consulted the CPL technical committee who apparently advised the Bajan camp that play would have been restarted at 8:40pm but both captain and coach objected to the decision.
A few minutes later the Tridents team rushed onto the field in joy as they learnt of their 8-run D/L win. A dejected, shocked looked was painted on the faces of the Warriors team as they reluctantly embraced their opponents.
A Slow over rate when Barbados bowled and bad umpiring decisions were among the issues raised by the Amazon Warriors.
With the in-form Chris Barnwell who was 14 off 10 with a six to his name and skipper Denesh Ramdin 17 from 10 balls with one six as well at the crease and their team needing around six runs per overs with about five overs remaining, the Warriors were on course to victory.
The Warriors also boycotted the presentation ceremony.
