Defending male and female champions Guyana made bright starts in the defence of their respective titles defeating Bermuda, Barbados and Cayman Islands respectively when the team section of the 22nd Senior Caribbean Squash Championships continued in Barbados yesterday.
In the women’s division, Guyana hammered Bermuda 5-0. Mary Fung-A-Fat gave Guyana a 1-0 lead, brushing aside Rachel Barnes 11-8, 11-8 and 11-5. It would become 2-0 as Ashley DeGroot earned a walkover victory.
Akeila Wiltshire would then seal the win as she defeated Susie Lacey in the third matchup 11-5, 11-5 and 11-6. The fourth matchup would witness Victoria Arjoon defeating Denise Kyme in straight sets 11-7, 11-6 and 11-7. In the final slated matchup, Larissa Wiltshire won via walkover.
On Tuesday in the male section, Guyana defeated Barbados by a 3-2 margin. Sunil Seth gave Guyana the early lead as he defeated Shawn Simpson in straight sets 11-4, 11-7 and 11-9. Richard Chin would then make it 2-0 for the Guyanese unit as he crushed Gavin Cumberbatch 11-6, 11-2 and 11-7.
Alex Arjoon would then seal the win for the visitors, overcoming Bryant Cumberbatch 5-11, 11-7, 11-2 and 11-8. In the fourth matchup, Rhett Cumberbatch would pull one back for the home side as he defeated Jason-Ray Khalil 7-11, 11-9, 11-2 and 11-8.
The final match of the fixture would see Mark Gilkes defeating Guyana’s Robert McDavid in straight sets 11-7, 11-9 and 11-9.
In the women’s section, Guyana edged Cayman Islands by a 3-2 score. Marlene West gave the Cayman Islands the shock lead as she humbled Fung-A-Fat in straight sets 11-7, 11-1 and 11-5. It would go from bad to worse for the local ladies as Ashley DeGroot lost to Eilidh Bridgeman in straight sets.
Bridgeman defeated DeGroot 11-4, 11-8, 11-7. The defending champs would then cut the deficit to one as Victoria Arjoon defeated Lara Conolly 11-9, 11-4 and 11-9. Guyana would then seal the matchup as Larissa Wiltshire and Tiffany Solomon were recipients of walkover victories.
The Veterans category saw defending champions Barbados defeating Guyana by a 5-0 score line. Andy Gill gave the home side a 1-0 lead as he defeated Ramon Chan-A-Sue 11-6, 11-7, 10-12 and 11-8 in their male over-40 matchup.
It would then become 2-0 as Mark Sealy brushed aside Brendon Mounter 11-1, 11-6 and 11-2 in their male over-50 fixture.
Barbados would then secure the fixture as Leon Truss, Kristina Evelyn and Ruth Deane-Webster received walkover wins in their slated male over-60, ladies over-40 and ladies over-50 matches respectively.
