Police have been able to pick up useful information from surveillance footage from the Chinese Delicious Restaurant, where cashier Debra Blackman was gunned down on Saturday night during an attempted robbery.
But up to press time last night, there was no information on the identity of the man who shot her.
Stabroek News was told that the shooter’s face is visible on the captured surveillance camera footage, although he is not a known character to the police.
Blackman’s daughter, Shelly, told Stabroek News yesterday that the family has heard nothing from the police. She also said neither she nor her relatives have heard from her mother’s employers of 10 years.
This newspaper has been unable to speak to the persons operating the restaurant.
Blackman, 48, of Critchlow Circle, Tucville, was shot and killed just around 7:15 on Saturday evening in what police believe is a botched robbery. It is suspected that Blackman may have attempted to run after the gunman pulled out his weapon.
A post-mortem examination conducted on her corpse yesterday revealed that Blackman sustained a single gunshot wound, which entered her shoulder and exited through her neck. She is to be buried on Sunday.
Crime Chief Leslie James told Stabroek News on Sunday that initial investigations have revealed that two men entered the restaurant and one approached Blackman and ordered food. According to James, one of the men attempted to rob her but the woman resisted, resulting in her being shot. The men escaped on a CG motor cycle but it is not clear if they managed to take anything.
Persons in the area who Stabroek News spoke with recalled hearing screaming followed by a single gunshot. Shortly after, a man emerged and jumped onto a waiting motorcycle, a woman had said.
The restaurant has been attacked by armed bandits several times within the past few years and Blackman had been repeatedly advised to leave the job.
