National Fullbore shooting captain Mahendra Persaud has taken his 2014 campaign to Canada with creditable results following his participation at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and the Bisley Annual Championships in the United Kingdom last month.
Persaud finished 14th overall in the Governor General’s final at the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association (DCRA) with a grand aggregate of 297 points with 31 V-bulls against stiff opposition from long range shooters of the United States, Great Britain and Canada at the Connaught Rifle Range, in Ottawa, Ontario.
He shot a possible 75 points with six V-bulls at 900 yards among his top performances and also scored 74.9 at 800 metres.
Kent Reeve of the United States was the winner with a grand aggregate of 299 points with 41 V-bulls followed by his compatriot Branson Green with 299.35 while Canadian Justin Hearn was third with 298.36.
In earlier results, Persaud shot 74.5 in the OTTAWA REGIMENT 800 meters while at the Gooderham 500 yards he dropped just one point to finish 49:4 while at 600 metres he recorded 49:6,.
In the Army and Navy Vets match he recorded at range 900 meters 71:5, Tilton 300 and 600 48.2 and 50.4, Macdougall – 300 meters 47:3 and 500 yards – 49:5.
In addition, Persaud shot 48.5 at both 300 and 800 at the Norman Beckett match while he had scores of 50.5 and 49.4 at 500 and 600 in the Col. John Brick match.
Most of the shooters are preparing the next year’s Palma Long Range World championships at Range Perry in Ohio, the United States.
Persaud, who captained Guyana to victory at the Short and Long Ranges at the West Indies Fullbore Shooting championships in Jamaica earlier this year went on to represent Guyana at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
He teamed up with Lennox Braithwaite to place 13th at the Commonwealth Games pair championships. Guyana was represented by Persaud and Braithwaite as competitors while Ransford Goodluck served a coach/manager.
Prior to attending the Games, Persaud, Braithwaite, Dylan Fields and Goodluck coached by United States based Guyanese Sigmund Douglas won the Overseas team match at Bisley beating into second position New Zealand at Bisley, regarded as the mecca of international shooting.
Persaud’s Canadian sojourn has capped a hectic but rewarding three months of international competition which included the West Indies Fullbore shooting championships in Jamaica, Bisley Annual championships in the UK and the XX Commonwealth Games in Scotland..
He is expected to return home tomorrow.
