Former President of the Guyana Gold and Dia-mond Miners’ Association (GGDMA) Fredrick McWilfred was robbed at knife-point at his home at Meadowbrook Gardens on Tuesday night.
It appeared that the robber was waiting for McWilfred in his yard, while his family was inside his house. The robbery occurred around 7:45pm after he returned from night prayers at the Kitty Mosque.
McWilfred, who is a licensed firearm holder, said he had just parked his car in his yard and was locking his gate when he felt a sharp object press against his neck. “He said don’t move or I’ll kill you,” he recalled a man saying from behind him.
He said he always kept his handgun on his person but that night, when he reached inside his yard, he dropped it in his bag. He said the bandit grabbed the bag, which also contained his identification documents and $300,000, and made a quick escape out the yard.
He said he started to shout for his wife but she was busy securing their children after hearing the commotion in the yard. He further stated that the police responded promptly to his call.
“These young men on CG motor cycles are frequent in this area and whatever victim they see, they rob,” he said, while adding that three nights ago a woman was robbed of her handbag whilst returning from work.
“Something needs to be done about these young men on CG bikes,” he said, noting that there were several other recent robberies in neighbourhood. “I didn’t expect anyone to hide out in my yard. I never expected this,” he said.
