A man died on the Alness Public Road, Corentyne yesterday following an accident involving a 4×4 vehicle.
The accident has also left three person injured, two of whom are listed as critical.
Dead is Roy DeSouza, 66, of Alness Village. The accident occurred on the Alness public road at around 17:30 hrs.
The injured persons are the driver of the vehicle, 19-year old Videsh Babulall, his 17-year old brother Yudesh called “Udy”, of Number 46 Village, Corentyne and a female friend whose name was given as Priya of Tain, Corentyne.
According to reports from persons on the scene, the pick-up GPP 8240 swerved from a car that was coming out from a dam and hit DeSouza
who was dancing on the road. DeSouza was said to be of unsound mind. The speeding vehicle then rode up a mango tree that is located approximately 50 feet from the public road. The occupants of the vehicle were thrown out. Public-spirited citizens
immediately ran to their rescue and rushed them to the hospital where they were receiving attention up to press time.
Two of the injured persons, Videsh and Priya are patients at the Anamayah Memorial Hospital while Yudesh is at the New Amsterdam Hospital in the intensive care unit.
According to a relative, at around 18:00 the parents of the boys received a call and they were informed of the accident. When they arrived on the scene, the relative said they saw the vehicle in the mango tree. When asked where the boys were going, the relative stated that the boys along with their friend were “hanging out” at the #63 beach. And from all indications they were taking the friend home when the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, family members of DeSouza said they heard of the accident and when they arrived at the scene they heard it was “Roy”. When they reportedly went to have a closer look they saw the man lying motionless and unconscious.
