Golden Jaguars Captain Walter Moore said yesterday that despite the lack of international experience of some members of the squad, the main objective is to qualify for the second round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Championships.
Speaking in an exclusive interview prior to departing for St. Kitts and Nevis, the FC Vostok fullback (a club from Oskemen, Kazakhstan) said: “The guys came together and set a goal which is to qualify out of the group. That’s the main goal to get through to the second round. It is possible, nothing is impossible, football is on the day, it’s about who wants it more on the day.”
The Golden Jaguars will open their campaign on Wednesday against Dominica. They will then faceoff with St. Lucia on Friday in their second fixture and end their campaign two days later against the host nation.
“With the squad we have and the team chemistry we have, these youngsters are eager to prove something to the nation, that they too, can make Guyana proud. A lot of people look at these guys because they are inexperienced, now is time for them to go out there and prove themselves.”
Asked to compare the talent level of the current setup against the previous national sides, Moore said: “The other teams had more experience because we had a lot of players paying outside. This team has a lot of talent too, it’s just that it hasn’t been recognized.”
He added: “My job is to help, regardless of the players selected, my job is to help develop them. We need to look at the bigger picture, we have 19 and 20-year-olds in the team and this is the time we need to give them that exposure.”
The former Fruta Conquerors stalwart feels that some of the players will do well in the tournament.
“They will shine in the tournament because personally I think we have some youngsters who can go to the next level which is obtaining a contract overseas.”
Questioned about the mood within the camp he said…”It is good. The guys are excited, relaxed and eager to go out there and play. The mood in the camp is good.”
