KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica Football Federation president, Captain Horace Burrell has praised the development of the country’s senior national women’s side, after they finished second in the recently staged inaugural Caribbean Football Union’s Women’s Caribbean Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Reggae Girls were good enough to reach the final of the tournament but were edged 1-0 by the hosts, courtesy of an eighth minute goal from Most Valuable Player Mariah Shade.
“In a tournament like that, it was not easy. Playing Trinidad at their home is in itself a challenging task and with a little bit of luck, our girls would have walked away with victory,” Captain Burrell told the Jamaica Observer newspaper.
“When you look at where we were a few years ago and compare that with where we are today, you have to feel certainly that we have achieved a considerable amount of success.”
By finishing second in the tournament, Jamaica also qualified for the CONCACAF Women’s Championship in October, where the three top teams will achieve automatic qualification for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
