Five persons have been held in connection with an armed robbery that occurred during the wee hours of Monday morning.
According to police sources, four persons were taken into custody on Monday while another was arrested yesterday. This newspaper understands that investigators are working on additional leads in order to crack the case.
On Monday morning at around 01:00 hrs, it was reported that three men armed with an chainsaw, a shotgun and what was said to be an AK47, forced their way into a Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant, Corentyne home and stole over 3 million dollars. The victims of the robbery operate a grocery at 170 Well Street at the bottom flat of their place of dwelling.
Stabroek News understands that the owners of the business, Michael Ramiah and his wife Basmati Gobin were overseas when the robbery occurred. Whilst they were on vacation, a son, Leon Veerasammy was left in charge of the business along with a nephew and a staffer. The males would normally sleep in the upper flat during the night. However, on the day in question the men said, they heard a banging on the shed that shelters part of the shop. The men investigated and saw three masked men. The occupants of the building attempted to hide. However, two of the armed men fired off several rounds as one used the chainsaw and cut a hole in the side wall. The men entered the premises through the hole and held up the occupants.
The bandits at that point demanded cash from the men. Leon was held at gunpoint and taken to the bottom flat into the shop to hand over the money. The other two men were also held at gunpoint and were guarded by the bandits.
After the 15-minute ordeal, the bandits escaped. The occupants of the home then summoned the police to the scene. The officers responded and retrieved a number of warheads matching the type used with an Ak47 and pellets from a shot gun.
Police investigations are continuing.
