Two gunmen yesterday escaped with millions of dollars after robbing the Post Office Training School and Business Centre, at Lamaha and Carmichael streets.
The attack occurred around 9:30am when the two men, armed with handguns, entered the building. One of the men hit the security guard across his forehead with a gun and they demanded the cash. The men then escaped in a white car that was parked on the roadside.
Telesha Whyte, the Public Relations Officer for the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC), told Stabroek News that the amount of cash stolen was not confirmed as yet and the investigation was ongoing. She indicated that one of the GPOC staffers was injured but was treated at a hospital and sent away.
Stabroek News was reliably told by another staffer that the injured worker was the guard, who received 14 stitches to his head before he was sent home.
When this newspaper visited the post office, the gates were locked and staff members had already been sent home. A security guard was guarding the building. Persons working around the area said they heard nothing until police arrived on the scene.
The GPOC, in a release, said the post office was temporarily closed to the public until further notice and customers were instructed to utilise the services at any other post office within the vicinity.
The Corporation further stated that it will be implementing additional security measures to prevent any recurrence.
This is the fourth time for the year that a post office has been robbed. Two months ago, the Campbellville Post Office was raided by a lone gunman. The Agricola and Mahaica post offices were also robbed. In recent years, post offices have been robbed frequently.
