Demerara Coach Garvin Nedd said that his aim in this year’s Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) 50-over Inter-County competition is to use the tournament as a launchpad for players who can get themselves in form and cement spots for the Guyana franchise in this year’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional competition.
“What I’m looking to get out of this tournament is for the players to be selected to represent the Guyanese franchise in the Regional tournament, we have some very capable players who had the opportunity of playing at the High Performance level and I think this is the ideal opportunity for them to showcase their class,” explained Nedd, who Stabroek Sports caught up with during the team’s practice session at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground.
The former first-class spinner said that he believes his team, joint Inter-County winners with Berbice last year, can break away and win the title, which they won back in 2012 outright.
He added that he thinks debutant spinners Yatesh Dhanpaul and Raj Nannan have the potential to be match-winners.
Nedd said that he also expects skipper Chris Barnwell to be a strong leader adding that he is certain that the hard-hitting all-rounder will lead the team in a mature way.
“I think he is strong in leadership. The guys rally around him and once he gets the respects of the players he will do well,” he opined.
The veteran coach said that during his time with the team he will look to focus strongly on the mental aspect of each player adding that he was very elated at having the opportunity to work with the players some of whom he has grown up with over the years.
Demerara will take on Essequibo at the Wales Ground tomorrow in the first round match while the President’s XI play Berbice at Everest.
