Leader of the Opposition David Granger was yesterday paid a courtesy call by China’s Ambassador to Guyana and among the topics discussed was the conduct of Chinese companies operating here.
In recent weeks there has been intense scrutiny of the conduct of Chinese logging company Baishanlin. Chinese investments and involvement here in the Marriott Hotel, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport expansion project and the Amaila Falls hydro project have also routinely come under critical examination by the opposition and other stakeholders.
A release from the Office of the Leader of the Opposition said that China’s Ambassador Zhang Limin paid a courtesy call on Granger yesterday. The release said that the meeting was cordial and informative and was held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
The release said that the Chinese Ambassador recalled the long history of friendship between the Communist Party of China and the People’s National Congress.
The Ambassador also felicitated Granger on his recent election as Leader of the PNCR.
Granger was accompanied by Ronald Bulkan MP, A Partnership for National Unity Shadow Minister for Local Government and Mark Archer Communications Director, Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
The release said that the two sides discussed a number of issues including Guyana China relations; APNU’s support for a no- confidence motion against the People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration; early elections; Chinese direct investments in Guyana and the conduct of Chinese companies operating in Guyana. Other matter relating to the lack of good governance, the escalation of crime and the refusal of the PPP/C administration to hold local government elections were also discussed.
