The high speed chase/shooting incident during which lawman Leroy English was wounded, is being investigated by the police’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), according to the Crime Chief.
Constable English was shot in his right arm and foot at the Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Public Road around 00:30 hrs on Wednesday. But the circumstances surrounding how he was wounded are still unclear. He has declined comment on the incident.
Meanwhile, Gerry Da Silva, told Stabroek News that he was the businessman who was being chased by an unmarked car, in the early hours of September 3. Da Silva, though he did not speak much about the incident, told this newspaper that he was driving when he noticed an unmarked car trailing his vehicle. He said he became afraid and continued driving until he met with his father where a confrontation took place.
Crime Chief Leslie James told Stabroek News yesterday that the matter is being investigated by the OPR. “…They might have been chasing after some vehicle,” James had told this publication on Thursday.
There have been suggestions that English had been mistakenly shot by another officer during the high-speed chase of Da Silva that reportedly began on the West Demerara and ended at Eccles, East Bank Demerara. Moreover, English had reportedly been clad in plainclothes, instead of his police uniform at the time of the shooting.
