Debutant Raj Nannan’s four-wicket haul yesterday helped Demerara defeat Berbice by 144 runs as round two of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) one-day Inter-County competition continued at the Wales community ground yesterday.
The left-arm orthodox spinner Nannan ended with 4-25 from his 10 overs while off-spinner Steven Jacobs captured 3-25 and Amir Khan two wickets for one run from 1.2 overs as Berbice fell for 88 in 24.2 overs chasing 232.
Earlier, Shemroy Barrington’s 69-ball half-century reinforced by knocks from Trevon Griffith (49) and Rajendra Chandrika (43), steered Demerara to their total in 50 overs.
Griffith cracked eight fours and a six. His opening partner Andrew Lyght Jr., was lbw to Joseph for 5 in the third over.
Chandrika added 55 runs with Griffith before the latter was pinned LBW by Deonarine. Chandrika, after hitting two fours in his workman-like innings was run out by a good piece of fielding from Ramoo.
Robin Bacchus (27) was aggressive as usual hammering two fours and two sixes in his brief knock but failed to carry on and was trapped leg before by Deonarine.
Demerara skipper Chris Barnwell’s woes continued when Permaul accounted for his dismissal while Barrington, who batted with most of the middle/lower order was eventually dismissed by Clements.
Jacobs smashed one six in his innings of 14 which was cut short by Ramoo who had him caught in the deep by Permaul. The all-rounder Wintz played a sensible, yet brisk unbeaten knock of 31 from 27 balls which featured two sixes and a four. Clements then got rid of Amir Khan (6) leaving Nannan stranded unable to get off the mark.
Berbice skipper Narsingh Deonarine (2-28) and Devon Clements (2-25) were the chief tormentors while left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul was his usual miserly self, finishing with 1-24 from 10 overs.
Krishendat Ramoo and Keon Joseph also bagged a wicket each.
During the chase Jacobs had opener Kandasammy Surujnarine expertly stumped by wicket-keeper Barrington for 15 while Nannan had Clements pinned LBW for a duck as the Berbicians slid to 34-2. The spin twins removed Anthony Bramble (17), Deonarine (9), Johnathan Foo (0) and Permaul (5) leaving the Berbicians staggering at 69-6.
Leg-spinner Nannan picked up his fourth wicket when he castled the stumps of Ramoo (11) who was bamboozled by the turn while off-spinner Yatesh Dhanpaul joined in on the action removing top scorer Seon Hetmyer for 18 courtesy of a leg before decision. Khan cleaned up the tail when he knocked over Joseph and Raun Johnson both falling without scoring.
