Boodie slams double century as E’bo maul U19s
By Delvon Mc Ewan
A record-breaking innings from Kevon Boodie propelled Essequibo to a huge victory over the National Under-19 team in their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Senior Inter-County Limited Overs encounter yesterday at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground.
Boodie blasted the first ever double century at the senior Inter County level to guide Essequibo to a mammoth 386-8 from their allotted 50 overs. In response, the U-19s were restricted to 157 all out in 34.2 overs, giving Essequibo victory by 229 runs.
Boodie, a former national U19 player, was dropped twice and responded by smashing 21 sixes and 14 fours to register the highest individual score recorded at the senior level in the Inter County limited overs competition.
His top score of 217 surpassed fellow Essequibian and former national youth player Yogeshwar Lall’s 185, which was the previous best.
The 21-year-old right-handed batsman shared an opening stand of 155 runs with Royan Fredericks before the latter was removed
by Sharaz Ramcharran for 45. His association with the Fredericks brothers continued as he then added 68 runs for the second wicket with Norman Fredericks (16) (elder brother of Royan Fredericks).
Boodie also received support from skipper Anthony Adams who played a cameo innings of 26 from 18 balls and all-rounder Ricardo Adams, who made 18.
The Parika Salem player was finally dismissed with his team well placed at 369-6 as he tried to clear the rope once more only to be caught by Tagenarine Chanderpaul on the cover boundary off the bowling of Renaldo Ali-Mohamed.
Ali-Mohamed was the most successful of the U-19s’ bowlers, capturing 2-39 from six overs.
In reply to the huge target, the U-19s fell for their second total under 200 as their batsmen failed for a second time. Chanderpaul top scored with 46 while the most consistent of the crop, Kemo Paul made 33 to follow up his top score of 47 made against Berbice on Thursday. West Indies U-19 player Shimron Hetmyer was the other batsman to reach 20 for the U-19s.
Bowling for Essequibo Hemchand Persaud and Anthony Adams were the chief wreckers of the U-19s innings as they combined to snare eight wickets between them. Persaud took 4-29 while Adams finished with 4-15 to take his wicket taking tally to nine from two matches.
The U-19s will now face Demerara at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda tomorrow while Berbice will tackle Essequibo on the said day at Everest Cricket Club ground, Carifest Avenue. Both matches are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
