A 25-year-old man is now a remanded prisoner after being charged with having an unlicensed firearm in his possession.
The allegation against Vickey Singh is that on September 7, at the Avenue of the Republic, he had a 9mm pistol in his possession without licence.
The man denied the charge when it was read to him when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
The prosecution’s case is that the police received certain information and contacted Singh on Avenue of the Republic and a search was conducted on him that uncovered the weapon. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to Singh being granted bail, while citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence as well as the fact that no special circumstances were advanced for bail to be granted.
As a result, Singh was remanded to prison until September 22, when his trial is expected to begin.
