A twenty-year-old driver was on Monday charged at the Whim Magistrate’s court with causing death by dangerous driving.
Dharshan “Vinesh” Babulal of #46 village, Corentyne appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh to answer to the charge. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was placed on $500,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court on the 8th of October, 2014.
On Sunday, August 31st it was reported that, at Alness village, Babulal was the driver of a 4×4 pick up vehicle GPP 8240 when he collided with Roy De Souza, 66, a labourer, of Alness. From the impact of the hit, De Souza went flying into the air before returning to the ground, a few feet away from the point of impact.
It was reported that De Souza died on spot. Eyewitnesses recalled that the speeding vehicle following the collision with De Souza, ran into a mango tree located approximately 50 feet from the public road.
Brother of the driver, Yudesh Babulall, 19, and Priyanka Outar called “Priya” of Tain, Corentyne, Berbice, were occupants of the vehicle when the accident occurred. They were thrown out of the vehicle. Public- spirited citizens immediately rushed to their rescue and took them to the hospital.
