Waiver for former Catholic Church night shelter supported by Mayor but not Town Clerk

Dear Editor,

The steps of stupidity, discrimination and disregard for decency continue unabated at City Hall. The public is now aware that we have taken to court the issue of the Minister of Local Government and Ms Carol Sooba for the waiver of twenty-seven million dollars to a wealthy business entity (Strand Cinema) and we have discovered a further sum amounting to over fifty-three million dollars. The city council has sent Ms Sooba on administrative leave, to allow for further investigation into this and other related transgressions; she has refused to budge.

Bishop Francis Alleyne on behalf of the Diocese of Georgetown (the Roman Catholic Church) is seeking in the form of a waiver a modest sum for a property situated at 315 East Street, South Cummingsburg, George-town, for the period 1997 to 2011.

This building was used by the Missionary Sisters of Charity (Mother Teresa Sisters) up until 2011 and was donated by the wife of the late Sir David Rose, our first Governor General. It was used as a night shelter for the city’s homeless and indigent.

The Mayor supports this waiver; the Church has been known to use the building for many years. However, the Town Clerk (acting) Ms Carol Ryan Sooba does not recommend the waiver and opposes a proposal for the waiver for a modest sum.

The Catholic community and the public must now recognize the enormity of the challenge we face.

Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green
Mayor
