Former Golden Jaguars captain Christopher Nurse said while he is disappointed that the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) bypassed him when selecting the team for the just concluded CFU Caribbean Qualification Cup campaign it is indicative of their treatment of foreign-born Guyanese players.
Nurse who currently plies his trade for NASL unit Fort Lauderdale Strikers told this newspaper that the federation has overlooked him for two years. “Yes, I was available for selection; however, I have not been contacted by the federation for over two years and it was no surprise at my exclusion
from the squad given the recent statements regarding players of foreign born Guyanese descent.”
Nurse, who captained the Guyana team during the previous World Cup Qualifying campaign, further said, “I was not contacted regarding the Caribbean Cup which was extremely disappointing and [neither] were [the] other members of the previous Golden Jaguars. I believe Guyana could have done something special had the strongest squad been selected for the competition.”
Asked about his thoughts on the current administration, the 30-year-old versatile midfield hard-man said “We have administrators but not administration. There is no evidence of anything positive being done to take football forward. The reputation of the federation and the payers and football as a profession or a spectator sport is at an all-time low now for Guyana.”
He further said, “It will be difficult to see change. We all know growth is dependent upon infrastructure and investment. I don’t think many business or investors want to attach their names to what is going on right now and you cannot blame them for that.”
