Route 44 minibus operators plying the Mahaica to Georgetown route are mulling fare hikes in light of higher gasoline prices.
Operators are considering a 50% increase in fares unless gasoline prices are reduced.
Drivers who spoke to Stabroek News on the condition of anonymity said that the current $200 fare is not profitable for the 23-mile journey, coupled with the gas price steadily increasing. They explained that it cost them $15,000 to full their gas tanks, but on average they only make about $5,000 profit.
“Victoria getting $200 and UG [Turkeyen] getting $100,” said one driver, as he pointed out the disparity in the distance covered. “We want the fare fuh raise,” shouted another driver, while another added, “or we will strike” and pointed out that the low fare tempts some operators to overload on their trips to earn more.
A few commuters told this newspaper yesterday that they have no problem with paying the increase, citing it as being reasonable, with the cost of maintaining vehicles and gas price.
