Saturday’s ‘Battle of Contenders Card’ received a timely shot in the arm by Courts (Unicomer Guyana Inc.) after two of the furniture giants’ representatives handed over a cheque to the top brass of the GBBC yesterday.
A cheque worth $300,000 was presented by Courts’ Pernell Cummings and Roberta Ferguson at the company’s Main Street store to president of the board Peter Abdool in the presence of board member Howard Cox.
According to Cummings, Marketing Manager of Courts, “Throughout the years, Courts has consistently given its support to boxing both amateur and professional and is proud to see the growth of the sport.”
Cummings then encouraged patrons to be part of Saturday’s card which has 28 rounds of fistic fury scheduled.
Ferguson, PRO of the Courts, echoed similar sentiments stated by Cummings.
Abdool then thanked Cummings and Ferguson, in the same breath commending Courts for being a long standing sponsor of the board. The sponsorship comes at a time when Courts is celebrating 21 years of being in Guyana. Courts will be involved in various sporting activities during its birthday month.
Other sponsors for the card includes Fly Jamaica, Diamond Paints, Banks DIH Limited, Giftland Office Max, Guyana Tourism Authority, NCN and Digicel
The card will be headlined by recently crowned Wray and Nephew Contender Series winner, Jamaican, Sakima Mullings and a combatant in the Series, Derrick ‘Lights Out’ Richmond of Guyana.
The Mullings/ Richmond light middleweight bout is planned for eight rounds and will keep fight fans at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on the edge of their seats throughout the affair if it manages to go to the distance.
Mullings (16(11)-1-0) from Stony Hill, Jamaica is the more polished and skillful fighter but the New Amsterdam resident, Richmond (3(3)-1-1) is a known knockout artist with bone breaking power.
The organizers have also pit former world rated boxer, Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore against Mark Murray, Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques vs Richard Williamson, Mark ‘The People’s Choice’ Austin against Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gonsalves and Winston Pompey vs Kemahl Russell.
Admission is $2,000 for ringside and $1000 for general seating. Bell time is 20:00 hrs.
