The use of unmarked cars is against police policy, according to acting Commissioner of Police Selelall Persaud.
Persaud was responding to a question posed to him by Stabroek News, in light of the shooting of plain clothes rank Leroy English, during a high speed chase between the police and businessman Gerry Da Silva at the Eccles Public Road on September 3.
Persaud stated that it has never been the policy of the police to use unmarked vehicles.
Constable English was shot on his right arm and foot at the Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Public Road but the circumstances surrounding how he was wounded and who fired the shot still remains unknown, as he has refrained from commenting on the matter.
Meanwhile, Da Silva told Stabroek News that he was driving when he noticed an unmarked car chasing his vehicle. He said he became afraid and continued driving until he met with his father and a confrontation took place.
There have been suggestions that English had been mistakenly shot by another officer during the high-speed chase of Da Silva that reportedly began on the West Bank, before ending at Eccles, East Bank Demerara. Moreover, English had reportedly been clad in plainclothes, instead of his police uniform at the time of the shooting.
The matter is currently being investigated by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility.
