Dear Editor,
On March 7, 2014, I wrote a letter highlighting the problems at Zeeburg Secondary School, with poor washroom facilities, no running water and a collapsing building, but these words have fallen on deaf ears. It is now a new school year in which the Ministry of Education proudly announced that all schools are in order for the new school year. I guess someone forgot to inspect Zeeburg Secondary, since there is no running water, no drinking water, no furniture for teachers, no textbooks and the toilets have no water to flush; students are forced to lean into a reservoir to pull water out with a bucket attached with a rope.
And while teachers are penalized for their performance by the CEdO of the Ministry of Education, who will sanction ministry officials for their poor performance?
I think that the Minister of Education should visit Zeeburg and have a firsthand look at the conditions under which our children are working and ask herself, if she would send her children there. This school has improved academically with very poor facilities; imagine how much better they could perform with the right tools and a conducive environment.
One thing is for sure, Zeeburg School is an accident waiting to happen.
Yours faithfully,
Raju Raja
