Bakewell has sponsored the first ever ‘Bakewell Junior Tennis Tournament’ and it will serve off tomorrow at the National Racquet Centre at Woolford Avenue and Camp Streets, Thomas Lands.
A release yesterday from the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) said that the Opening Ceremony for the tournament will be held at the National Racquet Centre at 5:00pm today.
The categories to be contested are U12, U14 and U18 boys and girls. Matches will be held on three consecutive weekends at the Racquet Centre, the National Park and the President’s College tennis facilities starting from Saturday morning at 8:00am.
The release said that the President’s College tennis court was financed by the Nasir & Nasir Food Group during 2012 as one of the initiatives of its Founders, the late Naeem Nasir and wife Annetta Nasir, to promote healthy recreational activities at the school.
President of the GTA, Grace McCalman at the presentation held on Wednesday afternoon at the Roti Hut Facility in North Road said that Bakewell has been one of the major sponsors of tennis in Guyana for a number of years now, and the company has played a major role in the development of the country’s young tennis players some of whom are now eligible for tennis scholarships. She also reflected on playing with the late Naeem Nasir who was known to enjoy playing tennis for a number of years before his demise two years ago.
The release added that the company’s CEO Rajin Ganga has committed to making the tournament an annual one.
