Residents of Turkeyen and its environs will benefit from mini physicals, awareness and education when the Turkeyen Police Station Management Committee in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force hosts a health fair in the community tomorrow.
The event is slated to start from 7 am with a community health walk that would be led by the Guyana Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists Uniform Programme (Pathfinders).
During a press briefing yesterday, Chairman of the Committee Warren King said that the walk will commence from outside the Police Station Compound, through Cummings Lodge and back to Dennis Street, Section ‘B’ Sophia, where the fair will be held next to the Love and Faith Church. There will also be a health and wellness lecture with presentations highlighting issues such as healthy eating practices, HIV awareness, domestic violence and abuse.
After the lecture, the health fair will be opened at 11 am. There will be facilities for HIV, blood sugar and blood pressure testing, dental and physical check-ups and much more.
According to King, a lot of organisations and companies would be getting onboard to support this worthy cause including St Joseph Mercy Hospital, Davis Memorial Hospital, Ministry of Health, Sophia Health Centre, St John’s Ambulance Brigade, the National AIDS Programme Secretariat, National Dental School, ANSA McAl, Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Ultra Waters, Humphrey’s Bakery, Star Party Rental, Guywaste Disposal Services, Rent-A-Tent and Ultra Connect.
According to Station Commander, Inspector Winston Watts, the purpose of the venture is to strengthen ties between the police and the residents of the community, since the police should not only be seen as officers but also as caregivers. Also present at the press briefing were Secretary of the committee Maxine Williams and committee member, Edward Singh.
