Two remanded over Section ‘K’ stick-up

Two men were yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly robbing a woman at gunpoint.

It is alleged that Kerry Cromwell, a miner of 130 King Edward Street, Albouystown and Nicholas Brazil, a taxi driver of 99 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt allegedly robbed Ashanti Lawrence at gunpoint on September 9 at Enachu Street, Section ‘K,’ Campbellville.

The men denied the charge when it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, at about 11:30 am on September 9, Lawrence was walking along Enachu Street when the men approached and held her at gun-point and relieved her of a cell phone, a shoulder bag, a purse, a quantity of cash and clothing all totaling $105,500.

A police report was later made and investigations led to the arrest of the men, who Grant said were subsequently positively identified by the Lawrence. Grant also told the court that Brazil had given a confession statement to the police.

He objected to bail being granted to the men, citing the nature, gravity, seriousness and prevalence of the offence as well as the fact that a firearm was used during the commission of the crime.

An unrepresented Cromwell asked the court for bail, while noting that he knew nothing about the charge. When asked by the magistrate whether he had antecedents, Cromwell revealed that he was once convicted and performed community service on a narcotic charge.

Brazil was also unrepresented. He had no antecedents.

Despite Cromwell’s application, both men were remanded to prison until September 19, when the case will be called for statements.
