Distance athletes get ready, the annual Courts (Unicomer Guyana Inc.)10km road race billed for September 28 was launched yesterday with lucrative cash prizes on offer. The fourth running of the event will see a record $1.2M being awarded to the top finishers and a further $500,000 going towards logistics.
“The Courts 10k has been growing and we’re hoping that this year is the biggest and we want it to be the best,” said Courts’ Marketing Manager, Pernell Cummings during the launch at the furniture giant’s Main Street store.
Cummings said that his company was looking forward to seeing Guyana’s best athletes performing.
“It’s about keeping Guyana fit as this month is our birthday month,” he added.
Meanwhile, president of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson, said that he was pleased to see Courts’ continued support of the calendar event.
Hutson also disclosed that all systems will be put in place to ensure the utmost safety of the participants.
“We have written to the Commissioner of Police highlighting the race and we hope that they ensure the route is safe.
“What we have also done is to ensure some of our marshals come out with some red flags to alert the motorists on the road of the race, so we can almost guarantee full safety this year,” He added.
The fixture, which is expected to attract usual suspects, Cleveland Forde, Cleveland Thomas, Alika Morgan and Euleen Josiah-Tanner, will run off at 06:00hrs.
Athletes are urged to register at the Guyana Olympic Association headquarters in Kingston no later than September 26.
In addition, there will also be a 3km race for Courts’ staff. The top three finishers will be handsomely rewarded.
See you there. (Emmerson Campbell)
