Colwyn Harding was rushed to Georgetown Hospital on Sunday night with his intestines protruding but owing to concerns about his safety at the institution his mother removed him yesterday.
Contacted, Sharon Harding told this newspaper that his intestines “fell out” into the colostomy bag, which is attached to his body to collect waste matter. She said protruding intestines was something that he would experience especially when he coughs, but Sunday was the first time that the entire thing came out. In addition to that there was some bleeding, she added.
Up to late last evening, he was seeking private medical attention.
Harding became a public figure after he accused the police of ramming a condom covered baton up his anus last November. Two police constables have since been charged with physically assaulting the young man. No charges have been laid against anyone in relation to the alleged sexual assault.
Devin Singh and Roslyn Tilbury-Douglas appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in June this year following a prolonged investigation. They are accused of assaulting Harding sometime between November 1 and November 13, 2013 at the Timehri Police Station.
Singh was placed on $200,000 bail while Tilbury-Douglas was placed on $100,000 bail. The matter is still before the court.
According to Sharon, given the fact that the hospital has also been blamed for some of the damage done to her son, she did not feel comfortable leaving him there. She said she took him to the emergency room sometime after 8 pm and while in there he was given an injection that made him drowsy. The woman said that in his drowsy state, the doctors on duty were attempting to get him to sign a paper for him to go back into theatre.
“I didn’t want to take any chances…,” she said adding that anything can be done to her son when she is not around. She said that from time to time because of his condition, he would develop inflammation and would have to get his wound cleaned. She reiterated that it was the hospital that contributed to the dilemma that her son now faces and she cannot understand why they were rushing to get him into theatre. She said she was right at the hospital and she was not consulted on him undergoing any surgery. She removed him around midday yesterday.
Based on medical advice, Harding requires one final surgery to fix his damaged intestines. Sharon told Stabroek News that she is still trying to raise the money for him to travel to Jamaica for this to be done. She said that the entire experience is “crippling him and frustrating him.” She said that it has “switched up his life.”
