The commencement of a series of meetings at City Hall in support of the Leader of the Opposition’s call for local government elections was disrupted after Town Clerk (ag) Carol Sooba ordered the gates locked.
Scores of supporters of the call for local government elections congregated at the northern gate at City Hall this morning, only to meet barriers and City Constabulary officers, who informed them that they cannot enter the compound.
Speaking with Stabroek News, Sooba said the gates were locked because no permission was given to the Mayor and his councillors to hold a meeting in the compound of City Hall.
Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green told this publication that no permission was needed from Sooba to have a meeting. She said even Mayor Hamilton Green was locked out and had to force his way into the compound.
