A cooking gas delivery man and his son got the scare of their lives when armed bandits fired at them yesterday and later escaped with their bags.
The brazen attack occurred at Flying Fish Street, South Ruimveldt around 11 am, while the men were delivering gas. However, their two assailants, one of whom was armed with a gun, escaped without the cash that they expected to get as the bags contained only documents.
Seeram Joseph Richmond, who has been delivering gas for the past year, told Stabroek News that he noticed when a red and black motorcycle pulled up and a man jumped off. At the time, he and his son were standing in the yard. He stated that after they realised what was happening, they both ran to the back of the yard.
Richmond said the single bullet that was fired did not hit anyone. The man who jumped off the bike, he said, then grabbed the bags that were in the truck and escaped.
He expressed belief that the bandits may have been trailing him as he usually visits the location at a specific time to deliver gas.
This, he said, was the first time that he has been robbed. He said that the men were dressed in “normal clothing” and were not masked.
According to Richmond, the ordeal has left him nervous and he vowed to be more cautious in the future. He also advised others persons who are delivering goods to be more careful. “They must be very very careful on the road,” he said, while noting that he was surprised that the bandits attacked during the daytime.
Shortly after the attack, police visited the scene.
