Recently I had cause to question the legitimacy of the East Coast Cricket Board and their Executive Committee. It seems as though someone was paying rapt attention as suddenly we hear about ECCB elections and the formation of an East Coast Cricket Committee.
The former President of the ECCB, Mr Bissoondyal Singh, suddenly announced that the East Coast Cricket Board had elections on August 10, 2014, something no one knew about and apparently remains a mystery, as most of the clubs I spoke to never received notices for the meeting. Mr Singh chose to slip this statement to the public at an unrelated event rather than make the elections a public spectacle as he usually did in the past.
In fact, Mr Singh had a ‘selection’ rather than an election, as he does not seem to have sent out or published notice to the member clubs on the East Coast.
The truth remains that the East Coast Cricket Board has dissolved as no elections have been held since 2009. Also it is impossible for Mr Singh to even run for the presidency as the ECCB Constitution prohibits anyone to be in office for more than five years.
It is misrepresentation to pronounce that the ECCB had elections if 90% of the clubs on the East Coast have no knowledge of the meeting. The former President involved continues to display his hypocritical tendencies.
However, on the positive side, I understand that something good has resulted from my letter as some responsible members on the East Coast have banded together and formed an East Coast Cricket Committee, which has received the blessings of the Demerara Cricket Board. This committee has been mandated to keep cricket playing on the East Coast all the way up to Abary and to represent their clubs and players on the DCB, in the interim.
Way to go East Coast and DCB!
