Hockey Club Hikers are all set for their fourth annual three-day junior indoor tourney today, at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
The event which is organised and executed by Hikers and their affiliate Saints Hockey Club, is being utilised as part of their junior development programme as well as to raise funds for their annual trip to Trinidad and Tobago in November.
The tourney which will be divided into three categories, is expected to attract over 100 participants from various clubs and schools. The competing categories are the TeleSky U-13, iNet Communications U-16 and Woodpecker Products U-21 divisions.
Marian Academy who are the defending U-13 champions in both the male and female categories, will face stiff competition from teams such as Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Hikers and Saints.
In the U-16 section, title holders GCC are expected to be tested by the duo of Old Fort Vikings and Saints Silencers in the male division, while Old Fort and Hikers will be the main threats to the Bourda ladies.
In the U-21 division, the Bourda-based side will attempt to retain their title in the ladies section but are expected to be challenged by the improving Hikers and Old Fort units.
On the men’s side, tourney hosts and heavyweights Hikers will have to be at their very best if they are to retain the championship against the likes of GCC, Saints and Old Fort.
On conclusion of the event, championship trophies and medals will be presented for the top three places. The most valuable players (MVPs) of the three sections will also receive Woodpecker Products gift certificates of varying amounts. In addition, the entire team from the champion school as well as the MVPs of the Global Technology inter-schools category will benefit from computer classes at the institution.
