Dredging of the Essequibo River is currently underway, with attention being paid to areas close to Wakenaam, Leguan, and Hog Island in an area known as Chalmers Crossing.
According to a press release from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), the trailing suction hopper dredge, Steve N is being used and the exercise began on Wednesday.
The release said the exercise marks the beginning of an extensive campaign to dredge the shallow areas of the Essequibo River that currently impede the operation of ships.
The Transport and Harbours Department’s ferry vessels operating between Parika and Supenaam/Wakenaam will benefit significantly from this exercise.
Meanwhile, according to the release, dredging has also been done in the Demerara River, deepening the main ships’ channel and alongside several wharfs.
