The nation’s best ruggers will be back in the National Park tomorrow for the kick-off of the Banks 7s.
On the heels of a successful 10s tournament, the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) will collaborate with the local conglomerate to stage a round robin tournament involving the Yamaha Caribs, the vastly improved UG Wolves, a team from the Guyana Police Force and winners of the 10s league, the Pepsi Hornets.
Notably absent will be winners of last year’s tournament, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) outfit. Some of their key players are still recovering from a litany of injuries.
Rugby action starts from 10:30hrs following the parade of the teams.
With the powerhouses, GDF out of contention, the other clubs would be looking to stamp their authority as they seek to lift the Banks 7s title.
The tournament is arguably the most anticipated one on the GRFU’s calendar and the union’s president Peter Green stated that it would be used as an evaluation of players to the road to Mexico (where the NACRA 7s championship will be held) as well as possible selection to the national team for the union.
Further, tomorrow there will be three women’s teams Hornets, Caribs and Police playing tag matches. (Emmerson Campbell)
