Faced with four charges, including possession of narcotics and assaulting a police officer, a young man was yesterday sentenced to prison for three years.
Sydney Davis, 21, was also fined and remanded when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Davis was accused of using threatening language towards Constable Devon McRae on August 15, while he allegedly assaulted McRae, resisted the officer’s arrest and had in his possession 35 grammes of cannabis on September 18. According to the charges, all of the offences occurred at Karasabai.
According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, on Friday, August 15, at 9 am, Davis went to the Karasabai Police Station
to visit an imprisoned friend. However, McRae refused to allow him to do so. Davis became enraged and told the officer that he would shoot and kill him with an arrow and bow. He then left the police station.
Prosecutor Grant further said that on September 18 at about 12 pm, McRae and other ranks were in Karasabai when McRae saw the defendant. The officer reportedly approached Davis and told him of the threatening language allegation against him. McRae also requested that Davis accompany him to the police station.
However, Davis refused and allegedly dealt a cuff to the officer’s face. He was subsequently arrested, but not before putting up a fight.
Upon his arrival at the police station, Davis was searched and in his right side pants pocket the police found a transparent plastic bag containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, Grant concluded.
Davis admitted to all of these facts except for the claims that he assaulted and threatened McRae. He pleaded guilty to the possession charge as well as the resisting arrest charge.
For the narcotics possession charge, he was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $30,000. For the charge of resisting arrest, Davis was fined $10,000.
He was remanded to prison on the two other charges that he denied and will make his next appearance on December 1 at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
