An East Coast Demerara miner is now dead following an attack by two gunmen who severely battered and robbed him, along with two other workers, of gold and money at an Issano mining camp on Thursday.
Dead is Joseph Nurse, 35, of Lot 24 Belmonte, Mahaica.
A police press release stated that Nurse was in his mining camp at 14 Miles, Issano with two of his workers when they were attacked and beaten by two men armed with a piece of wood and a gun. The release said the men demanded gold and money and subsequently tied up Nurse and the others before leaving the camp.
Additionally, the release stated that 18-year-old Danesh Rampersaud of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo managed to free himself and untie the others
and they were all taken to the Troy’s Resources Medical Centre, where they received treatment.
Nurse had to be air dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Friday, where he was admitted until he died yesterday at 4 am.
Nurse’s relatives, speaking with this newspaper via telephone, said that they learnt of the incident on Friday morning after an interior businessman contacted them.
The dead man’s sister said Nurse had been expected to return to Mahaica on Sunday. Furthermore, she said that prior to the fatal beating, Nurse never had any such experience.
She said doctors had informed the family that Nurse’s brain shifted as the result of being badly beaten to the head.
A post-mortem examination is to be conducted on Nurse, who is survived by his four minor children and other relatives.
