Telephone and data services along the East Bank of Demerara were early on Thursday morning disrupted as a result of vandalism and the theft of two spans of fibre optic cable, measuring more than 400 feet, at Agricola, East bank Demerara. According to the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T), thousands of customers in Providence, Mocha, Diamond, Grove, and New Hope were affected.
GT&T said it promptly diverted a team of engineers who were scheduled to carry out works on the East Bank Demerara Four lane Road to the area and service was restored shortly after noon today.
Vandalism and cable theft have been plaguing the phone company over the years resulting in severe negative impacts, including the diversion of its technical and material resources away from its planned expansion programme works and routine installation and maintenance activities.
