Demerara whip Developmental XI by innings and 15 runs

Amir Khan’s ton and Paul Wintz’s four wickets overshadowed Kemo Paul’s half-century as Demerara whipped the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Developmental XI by an innings and 15 runs with one day to spare as the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) four-day Inter-County tournament concluded yesterday at the Everest ground.

The National Under-19 all-rounder, scored a defiant yet aggressive 73 from 88 balls with 10 fours and two sixes.

He batted for some 285 minutes and was the backbone of his team’s second innings total of 169

all out finding support only from spinner Steven Sankar (33*) and all-rounder Kellon Carmichael (20).

Wintz, who wrecked the Developmental XI minutes before stumps on day two with three quick wickets, ended with 4-69 from 17 overs.

He was assisted by Amir Khan 2-33 while the other operators with the ball Gavin Moriah, Chris Barnwell and Raj Nannan chipped in with a wicket each.

The GCB Development XI, who faced a deficit of 146 after Khan’s 116 steered Demerara to a second innings score of 338, were staggering at 38-5 after the loss of the top order due to late strikes prior to the close of play on the second day.

Yesterday, however they saw the young pair of Kemol Savory (9) and Paul adding 32 runs. Paul, who resumed his innings on nine, took the attack to the opposition bowlers with much poise and class, bringing up his half century after facing just 70 balls with six fours and two maximums.

The 17-year-old stood firm after the loss of Savory, who was removed by Wintz.

Nannan then had Yatesh Dhanpaul (1) trapped LBW while the second highest top-scorer of the team Carmichael held out to Wintz of Khan’s bowling as the Developmental XI slid to 101 for 8.

The GCB XI innings ended after Khan removed Nial Smith for 2 leaving Sankar unbeaten. The next round is set to commence next Tuesday when the GCB XI taking on Berbice at Wales while Demerara battle Essequibo at Bourda.
