With local government elections (LGE) high on its agenda, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Sunday visited the East Berbice-Corentyne area as part of its country-wide outreach exercise.
According to a release, Member of Parliament Joseph Harmon and a team of APNU officials visited the residents of Skeldon, Number 52 Village, and Kildonan, Corentyne respectively to speak on a number of issues, particularly the long-delayed LGE.
In his address, Harmon pointed out that LGE had not been held for over 17 years, a “blatant violation of the Laws of Guyana”. The release further said that Opposition Leader David Granger had called on the Government of Guyana to name a date for the hosting of LGE which is “constitutionally overdue”.
“APNU continues to call on the government to ‘call’ Local Government Elections and is also supportive of the AFC’s [Alliance for Change] tabled no-confidence motion in parliament,” the release read.
Harmon further said, “When Parliament reconvenes and should the no-confidence motion be called, debated, and voted upon, there should be no misconceptions about the APNU’s position; we fully support the motion.”
Meanwhile, at all of the meetings residents expressed their disgust at the “continued mismanagement, corruption and poor governance of the People’s Progressive Party administration” the release said.
