The first phase of the current dredging of the Essequibo River by the Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge Steve N is scheduled to be completed in another two weeks.
In a press release, the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) said its hydrographic surveyors will be surveying the area to determine its depth before the vessel is withdrawn from the area.
Dredging started in the Essequibo River at Chalmers Crossing on September 17, in keeping with MARAD’s plan to dredge the shallow areas of the river that currently impede the movement of ships. Dredging will resume in the Demerara main ships channel and alongside wharves in the Demerara River on the completion of this activity in the Essequibo River.
