The Hebrew Family of Guyana joins Israelites around the world in celebrating their holy season in the month of Etanim, the 7th month of the Hebrew biblical year.
According to a press release, after the sighting of the New Moon in the land of Israel, the season started on the 1st of Etanim (27th September).
The first day is known as Yom Teruah, which is a day full of celebration and also sets the tone of deep introspection and reflection in preparation for the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippor, an important day in the Hebrew calendar. It is the day when Israelites observe a solemn fast and seek forgiveness from the Creator. This Day of Atonement is observed on the 10th of Etanim (October 6), the release said.
Five days after the Day of Atonement, Chag Succoth (October 11) widely known in Guyana as the Feast of Booths or Feast of Tabernacles is celebrated. The first day of Chag Succoth commences with a holy convocation. To commemorate Chag Succoth, Israelites are commanded to observe feasting and dwelling in booths for seven days. This feast marks the harvest of produce from the land, the release said.
After observing seven days of feasting, the holy season ends on the 22nd day of Etanim with an eighth day of solemn assembly called, Shemini Atzeret (October 18).
