An accused robber, who the police say held his victim at knife-point and stabbed him in the neck before relieving him of a gold chain, was yesterday remanded to prison.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry was Devon Alder, 31, a sawmill worker who denied that on September 20, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, being armed with a knife, he robbed Nizam Mansoor of one gold chain valued at $300,000.
Alder, who was unrepresented by an attorney, gave his address as 932 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara when the case was called at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One.
The prosecution’s case is that at about 11 am on September 20, Mansoor was walking in the vicinity of the market when Alder accosted him from behind and placed a knife to his neck.
According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, Alder held on to Mansoor’s chain and stabbed him in the neck as he resisted. He then allegedly relieved Mansoor of the jewellery.
The matter was later reported to the police, who conducted an investigation that led to Alder being subsequently arrested.
Alder was told by the magistrate that he would be remanded to prison until October 10.
