A plumber is now behind bars after choking his former partner during a row on a city street.
Gavin Damon was yesterday sentenced to seven days imprisonment for assaulting Rayshanna Cush, with whom he had shared a common-law relationship.
Damon, of 227 New Settlers Street, Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara, was also charged with using threatening behaviour towards a security guard, Christopher Worrell.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of assault but denied threatening Worrell when the charges were read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
It is alleged that at Regent Street, Georgetown, on October 1, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Cush.
The unrepresented Damon, when asked to enter a plea, told the court that he is guilty but had an explanation. He stated that on the day in question he went to collect his money and cell phone from Cush and in the process he held her hand and a scuffle ensued between them, after which both of them fell to the ground.
Worrell, who was nearby, attempted to intervene and told Damon to release the victim at which point Damon pulled out a pipe cutter.
Damon went on to explain that a man who he said was an old police officer came with a gun and hit him to his head before threatening to shoot him.
But according to Prosecutor Michael Grant, Damon choked Cush after they argued about his phone and money.
As regards the threat to Worrell, Grant said that Damon pulled out the pipe cutter and he threatened to lash the man. He added that a police officer, who was in the vicinity, subsequently intervened and arrested Damon.
Damon, however, vehemently denied threatening Worrell.
After hearing the submissions, the magistrate informed Damon that he would be sentenced to seven days imprisonment for choking Cush and remanded to prison on the threatening behaviour charge which will be dealt with in Court Six, where a hearing is fixed for October 7.
