Umami sauces and seasonings debuted at GuyExpo yesterday drawing attention with a huge display in the ‘Guyana Supermarket’ section.
Director of Umami Incorporated Chanchal Persaud told Stabroek News that the company was officially launched in November 2013. The company manufactures and distributes products such as pepper sauce, seasonings, Chinese sauce, tomato ketchup, mustard and even lemonade in various flavours. Persaud said the company’s products are locally made with all local ingredients and she pointed to the labels that carry the colours of the Guyana flag.
She noted that farmers were contracted to supply the necessary ingredients, for example, the yellow peppers for the pepper sauce. She said the products are all manufactured according to international standards and urged Guyanese to support locally made products.
Umami products are distributed locally but the company is looking to export in the future.
Umami, taken from the Japanese refers to the fifth primary taste.
