Third-positioned side Sunburst Camptown overcame cellar occupants Beacons FC by a 5-2 margin when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) senior division one league recommenced at the Tucville Community ground on Wednesday.
Reshawn Sandiford and Kwame LaFleur led the victors with doubles respectively while Anthony Sancho netted a solo effort. Sandiford found the back of the net in the 16th and 51st minutes while LaFleur netted in the 75th and 80th minutes.
Sancho completed the win with a 39th minute conversion. On target for the losers in the 30th and 60th minutes were Chris Galloway and Kimba Braithwaite correspondingly.
With the win, Camptown moved to 14 points while Beacons remained in the cellar position with only three points. In what would prove to be a high scoring matchup, Sandiford opened the scoring for Camptown with a right- footed shot down the centre of the goal, from inside the area.
However Beacons would then level the score line 14 minutes later as Galloway netted, curling his effort into the right-hand corner after receiving the ball just outside the centre of the 18-yard area.
The score line would then change once more as Sancho scored, slotting his effort into the empty net following a right-sided Sandiford cross, after the latter stole the ball from the defender following a mix-up between him and his shot-stopper within the area.
It would then become 3-1 six minutes into the second period as Sandiford sealed his brace with a left-sided free kick, which took a deflection off the defensive wall and settled into the right-hand corner.
Not wanting to go down without a fight, Beacons would then cut the deficit to one nine minutes later as Braithwaite netted, powering his effort through the hands of the keeper and into the back of the net from within the box.
LaFleur would then restore the Campbellville unit’s two-goal advantage, rifling his right-footed attempt from inside the left side of the box, into the lower left-hand corner 15 minutes later.
He would then seal the three points for his side five minutes onwards as he placed his effort into the left-hand corner after being in a one-on-one situation with the Beacons custodian within the area.
Meanwhile, relegation-threatened Northern Rangers upset the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) by a 1-0 score line.
Also hosted at the Tucville Community ground, Omalli Nassy secured the hard-fought win for the Kitty-based unit through a 78th minute penalty kick conversion. With the win, Northern Rangers leapfrog two places to the fifth spot with nine points.
GFC remains in the sixth position with seven points. In a fixture devoid of clear-cut chances, GFC’s Marvin Carter would fire the first warning shot of the opening half in the 13th minute.
Waiting within the centre of the penalty area, Carter would have his headed effort tipped over the crossbar smartly by the opposing custodian, after latching onto a poorly attempted clearance by the Northern Rangers backline.
Deron Bowen would then fashion the Kitty unit’s first real attack of the matchup in the 49th minute, lashing his right-footed effort just over the crossbar within the right side of the penalty area.
The Bourda-based unit almost stole the lead in the 56th minute as a flat right-footed Orlando Gravesande strike from the right side of the 18-yard box was denied by the outstretched hands of the Rangers custodian.
With the minutes ticking away, veteran forward Bowen would earn his side a penalty kick opportunity as he was bought down within the left side of the penalty area, sandwiched between two defenders.
Tasked with taking the spot-kick, Nassy would place his right-footed effort into the left-hand corner of the net to seal the vital three points for his side.
The action is slated to continue today at the same venue with a doubleheader. In the opening matchup, home side and second placed unit Fruta Conquerors will lock horns with seventh positioned side Flamingo FC at 18:00hrs.
The feature contest of the night will then witness league leaders Pele FC facing off against fourth positioned side Guyana Police Force (GPF) at 20:00hrs.
