Although vendors at the Stabroek Market Wharf have been advised to relocate, due to the danger posed by the collapsing facility, they haven’t received any updates about where or how soon they would be relocating.
When Stabroek News visited the wharf yesterday, vendors were still seen plying their trade as wood and zinc hung from above. Three weeks ago a section of the wharf collapsed.
A vendor, who asked not to be named, told this newspaper that after the collapse there was a meeting and vendors were told not to conduct business in or around the collapsed area. The man also stated that the authorities promised to return soon to “draw a yellow a line” and anyone crossing that line would be doing so at their own risk.
“Nobody ain’t show up yet to draw any line or anything. The ministry said that they didn’t get any money yet to build it back. Everything left just so,” the man said.
A woman, who only wished to be called as “Linda,” said that she saw zinc sheets blowing off of the roof and into the river yesterday. “I don’t know why de people dem don’t come and fix it, it gun kill people,” Linda said.
