The journey on the redemption road to Mexico starts this weekend when the GRFU kicks off its Sevens league at the National Park.
The three-week league was launched yesterday at the Wind Jammer Hotel and the mantra of the six-time NACRA Champions (2006-2011) was reclaiming the coveted Sevens championships.
During the launch, president of the union, Peter Green stated that the league which involves five male and two female clubs “is essentially to select the local ruggers to represent Guyana at the December 3-4 championships in Mexico City, Mexico.
Green also noted that Guyana’s participation in the tourney is a must since the 2012 runners up to Mexico was a no-show last year due to inadequate sponsorship.
“It is essential for this team to participate because it is a qualifier for the Pan Am Games,” Green said.
Green also extended gratitude to the sponsors.
The Windjammer/Golden Brook-sponsored league, which starts at 15:00hrs today will involve the male teams of the Yamaha Caribs, Pepsi Hornets, GDF, the UG Wolves and a team from the Guyana Police Force.
Chronicle’s Rawle Toney has also signaled his intentions of sponsoring two trophies. The Hornets and Caribs female teams will also compete in the league.
Secretary of the GRFU, Terrence Grant highlighted that the male ruggers of the Hornets and Caribs will get the league off to a flying start on Saturday.
