Nicola Ramdyhan again displayed her dominance in the local tennis arena when she won the Bakewell/Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) tournament held last weekend at the President’s College Tennis Court. The 16-year-old Ladies Champion made light work of the promising Kalyca Fraser, 12, defeating her 6/0 6/1 to be crowned the Bakewell Junior Girls Champion.
In other results from last weekend’s match, Sarah Klautky defeated Jeremiah Kalekyezi 6/1 and Adesh Khayyam defeated Vadeanand Resaul 6/2 in the Medley U10 semi-finals to secure their places in the finals. The remaining finals of the competition are on this weekend leading up to the closing ceremony which is set for the National Racquet Centre at 4.30pm.
There is expected to be a keen showdown in the Boys’ Under-14 final between two talented 12-year-olds Heimraj Resaul and Jordan Beaton. This match will only be played if Resaul is fit, after recovering from a recent illness. The match is tentatively scheduled for 3.30pm at the GBTI Recreational Centre.
The Medley U10 Finals will be played between Sarah Klautky and Adesh Khayyam and the Boys U18 finals will be played between Keenan Persaud and Jordan Beaton. These two matches will start concurrently at the National Racquet Centre at 3pm.
Meanwhile, for the first time last Saturday, since its construction in 2012, a small gathering of President’s College students were able to witness competitive and exhibition matches played by members of the National Squad on the court there. As a tribute to the late Bakewell CEO Naeem Nasir, the GTA engaged the company’s executives and the school to arrange for matches to be played at the school during the tournament. “The GTA hopes once again that the school will be able to adopt tennis as one of its primary recreational sports through teachers who are willing to make progress with the sport as part of PE classes,” the group said.
