Rishi Sukhram and Shanella Webster ran out winners of the male and female categories of the Trophy Stall Golf tournament held at the Lusignan Golf Course last weekend.
Sukhram who just returned from the previous weekend’s three-day Barbados Open Golf Tournament where he placed fourth in his 0-9 Flight, said last Saturday’s win in the same flight category at the Trophy Stall Golf Tournament was easy.
The win was the veteran golfer’s third for the month of September.
In the Ladies event Webster said that she was delighted with another win and gave “thanks to my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
and to my coach, His Holiness, Dr. Philbert London, who has us up at 4:00 a.m. in order to be at practice for 5:30 until about 9:30 at least 2 days in the week.”
President of the LGC David Mohamad (who set a record net 60 earlier this year and has been in the first five in many recent competitions), Vice President London and Club Captain Chatterpaul Deo, all received prizes for excellent play last Saturday.
Mohamed and London were first and second in their category while Deo won the Nearest to The Pin prize.
Mohamed also won the Best Net trophy.
Playing in four Flights, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places were won by the following players respectively: – 0–9 Flight – Rishi Sukhram 8/70, Avinash Persaud 3/73, and Imran Khan 7/74. 10–18 Flight – Bhowlaram Deo 16/71, Sam Harry 11/74 and Kishan Bacchus 15/76. 19-28 Flight – Club President, David Mohamad 20/68, Vice President Dr Philbert London 25/68 and consistent rookie Pur Persaud 28/68. Ladies Flight – phenomenal Shanella Webster 23/69 and consistent Joaan Deo 20/77.
Sponsor of the tournament, Managing Director of Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich, was unavoidably absent from the day’s activity.
However, past Club President – with an outstanding record of excellent presidency, Hilbert Shields, – himself a winner of many trophies at the Golf Club, ably represented Sunich, conveying Sunich’s pleasure at sponsoring the tournament.
“Before 15 years ago, trophies were hard to come by for the sport, and had to be imported. When Mr. Sunich opened up the Trophy Stall he immediately agreed to support the Golf Club and contributed many trophies or gave regular discounts on trophies to encourage Golf in Guyana. Now he has moved to the place where for some five years he has also become a sponsor of golf tournaments,” said Shields.
Deo was very appreciative of the condition of the golf course and of the performance of the golfers. He noticed that there were some slight winds, but the golfers gave very good performance as indicated by the closeness of the scores of the winners.
